Don't Bug Me, I'm Reading

Okay, so this is probably my favorite bulletin board yet. It's just so adorable, and was actually pretty quick!

How perfect is this to welcome spring? Now I want to go outside and lay on a blanket with a good book. Maybe this weekend...

Compound Word Hearts

A simple little reading activity just in time for Valentine's Day!
Cut out about 25 heart-shaped diecuts from pink, red, and purple paper. Cut each one in a zigzag down the center. (I cut 4 or 5 at a time to speed up this process).

Next, generate a list of 25 compound words. Depending on your grade level, these can be simple or complex. Write the words on the hearts, with each small word of the compound word on its own heart half.

Mix them up and put them in a Ziploc baggie and voila! Another quick, cute, and free word work station!

Tip for use with emergent readers: Use compound words with small, easily recognizable components (i.e. pancake). On each half, glue on a simple clipart picture above the word. Using our example "pancake", glue on a picture of a pan on the "pan" side and of a cake on the "cake" side. This will help students with decoding and word recognition.
**UPDATE 12/2017: I now offer this game in my TPT store! Get it here!**
